Sidwell Friends School Needs a Change?
by Susan Ryan
The Education Intelligence Agency offered some advice for Change in their latest Communique. The advice is for the Sidwell Friends School, in light of our next President’s educational policies.
How to Improve Sidwell Friends School Add a unionized workforce and a collective bargaining agreement.
The unionized workforce and contract details are “For the Kids”; as they say on the picket line. Thanks to the power of the NEA, AFT and groups such as the Chicago Teachers Union [see Collin Hitt’s observations in the Capitol], the Illinois Loop illustrates What It Takes To Get Rid Of a Teacher Who Doesn’t Teach.
Regarding some lunatics in charge of the classroom, we parents can only attempt to reassure our children and ourselves that it’s just this one school year and next year will be better. There’s a lesson in itself. But is that tolerance a positive cultivating exercise for our children?
It does appear that families are finding Right to Work states more appealing than Forced Unionism states such as NY, PA and Illinois, but never mind that. Here’s more from the Education Intelligence Agency for Sidwell Friends School:
One of the NCLB reg ’solutions’ is to allow students in failing schools (ala standardized testing), the option of attending a neighboring school district. In my rural home town (which is not failing), that option would involve a drive to a neighboring town. Maybe I missed the public transportation options for the families who don’t have the means or the time to make those drop offs and pick ups.
Apparently in a more urban domain, and for what it’s worth, Mayor Daley recognized the same problem back in 2004 with his Reconnaissance 2010 plans:
“A student should not have to travel half way across Chicago to find a high school that serves his needs and interests,” Daley said.
More advice from the Education Intelligence Agency for Sidwell Friends:
My kids have had some gifted school teachers. The importance of their job makes me think they should be paid in kind. Union teacher contracts allow the worst to have the best of benefit protections.
From EIA:
The Obama girls, as opposed to Chelsea Clinton, will become part of the Sidwell School population’s racial minority. EIA reports that the DC public schools consist of 95% racial/ethnic minorities. Often homeschoolers hear a mantra from the teachers unions, that our children are denied such diversity as in the DC public schools. Diversity in the classroom must always trump safety in the big scheme of things.
As an aside, our homeschooled boys just attained their black belts in Tae Kwon Do in a multi-ethnic academy led by their Korean born master teacher. We found the time and opportunity without them being locked (literally) into our local school system. Some Spotsylvania County, Virginia homeschoolers might also contest the main stream ?socialization’ goals, but I digressed and shouldn’t divert agendas with facts. From EIA’s Help List:
Who needs reading, writing and arithmetic?
President Elect Obama’s most determined educational policies are listed below:
1) Barack Obama will reform No Child Left Behind
Obama and Biden believe teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill i

At least 20 people, including one policeman, have been killed in riots in the Nigerian city of Jos after local elections, aid workers say.
A local journalist told the BBC that Muslim opposition supporters had gone on the rampage when they heard their candidate to head the council had lost.
This sparked unrest in the religiously divided city, with Christians burning mosques and Muslims burning churches.
A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed and the army sent to restore order.
In 2001, more than 1,000 people died in religious clashes in the city.
An unnamed Red Cross worker told Reuters news agency that at least 20 people had been killed and 300 wounded in the clashes.
“Very early this morning a group of protesters macheted to death a policeman,” one witness told Reuters.
A police spokesman confirmed to the BBC that one officer had died but could not give an exact number of civilians casualties.
Poll rumours
A lecturer at the University of Jos said smoke could be seen from burning tires and buildings.
“From where I’m standing I can see smoke coming from all over the city,” Victor Dugga told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme.
He added that people are very worried as there has been no information on the local media about the violence.
“We have three radio stations in Jos and they are only playing music and telling us about what happened yesterday. Nobody is telling us what happened now,” he said.
The protests started overnight with singing and burning of tyres on the roads by groups of youths over reports of election rigging.
The election result has not been officially announced but the protests turned violent after a rumour spread that the opposition candidate to lead the local council had been defeated.
The opposition All Nigeria People’s Party and the ruling People’s Democratic Party allegedly involved in the fray are yet to make any statement on the matter.
Local journalist Senan Murray told the BBC’s Hausa Service that Muslims in the city tend to support the ANPP and Christians the PDP.
In 2004, a state of emergency was declared in Plateau State, of which Jos is the capital, after more than 200 Muslims were killed in the town of Yelwa in attacks by Christian militia.
Correspondents say communal violence in Nigeria is complex, but it often boils down to competition for resources such as land between those that see themselves as the true “indigenes” of an area, and those that are considered to be more recent “settlers”.
In Plateau State, Christians are regarded as the indigenes and Hausa-speaking Muslims the settlers.

Georgia’s Miller: ‘Far left liberal agenda’
by Mark Silva
Good ole’ Zell Miller.
The former Democratic governor of Georgia, who delivered the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in 2004 with his passionate appeal for President Bush and stern warnings about Sen. John Kerry, has come out with an endorsement for Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in the hotly contested Georgia Senate runoff.
Miller calls Chambliss “the last man standing between a far left liberal agenda sailing through the United States Senate, an agenda that (Democratic rival) Jim Martin just can’t wait to help move on.” (The runoff for one of the few still unresolved Senate races that will determine the Democrats’ ultimate advantage comes Dec. 2)
This is the Democrat who starred at the GOP’s convention in New York four years ago with a similar warning about liberals: “No pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often than the two senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry,” he said back then. “Together, Kennedy/Kerry have opposed the very weapons system that won the Cold War and that is now winning the War on Terror.”
While Kerry opposed spending on new weapons, he said, Bush remained firm in the war on terror: “No matter what spider hole they may hide in or what rock they crawl under…. George Bush wants to grab terrorists by the throat and not let them go to get a better grip.”
Worked for Bush. Working for Chambliss?
